Facebook Clear For Facebook Removes Ads, Makes It Look More Appealing

Facebook has a lot of great things, your friends, your farm, fan pages and a great way to share pictures. Facebook gives you a lot of great features but it sometimes gives you a few unwanted ones or makes some of it’s great features more than unappealing (case in point: the ever unpopular picture viewer). For Chrome users, Facebook Clear is an extension that can remove ads, make image thumbnails more attractive and give the picture viewer a much needed facelift while making navigation easier.

This extension is pretty straight forward, all those ads you see, whether they appear on your homepage, when you’re working on your virtual farm or just looking for Lady GaGa’s fanpage, you wont be seeing them any more.

The extension wipes the right panel of Facebook pages. That also means you wont be able to see who recently poked you when you’re on your homepage or any upcoming events, but they will still be accessible from the notification area. The right panel is basically the area Facebook uses to suggest stuff when you’re logged in; the extension gives you life without suggestions from Facebook.

In addition to making the pages look cleaner; this extension also fixes the navigation bar to the top of your browser which means once you’re through reading your news feed, you don’t have to scroll to the top to check notifications or messages. Since the ads are being blocked, Facebook will load faster; but the feature that can really win over some users is the improvement to the photo viewer which by general Facebook user opinion is just plain ugly. A slight transparent effect is added to the black backdrop in the picture viewer and a reflection effect to the pictures. It also adds a rounded effect to the image thumbnails making them look more like iPhone icons.

When it comes to quickly protect your files with password, the best method would be to encrypt them from Windows shell context menu. If you’re not using TrueCrypt or BitLocker to protect your files and looking for a simple tool to encrypt files by staunch encryption algorithm without having to configure lengthy settings, you may want to try out Lazar Crypter. It is an open source app which integrates with Windows context menu, providing option to encrypt and decrypt any file with only one click. Moreover, integrity check, copy, cut, and paste functions are also provided along to quickly move encrypted files to external storage mediums.

It adds an extra menu in Windows context menu, from where you can access all the provided functions. Lazar Crypter doesn’t simply password protect files, it’s backed by 256-AES encryption algorithm to ensure data confidentiality.

After installation is completed, right-click the file which you want to encrypt and from Lazar Crypter menu, click Encrypt. You can also select multiple files to encrypt them with same password in one go.

It will ask you to enter the password to encrypt the file. Once done, it will move the file into native encryption file format container – ICR.

Unlike encryption which can be applied over multiple files in one go, the ICR files can’t be collectively decrypted. You need to select encrypted file one by one, and follow the decryption process.

Lazar Crypter works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

SeventhGate Turns Your Wireless Network Card Into Virtual WiFi Router

Are you looking for a tool to convert you PC wireless card into virtual router, so it can be used as WiFi hotspot and also to connect portable devices which don’t support both Open (non-authenticated) and WEP protected ad-hoc connections? Among all the virtual router apps available out there, Connectify and VirtualRouter are considered to be the best. Both work quite well on our systems but many users have faced problems. If you’ve been frantically looking for an alternative, you may want to have a look at Seventhgate.

Seventhgate, an open source tool, allows users running Windows 7 and Windows Serer 2008 R2 to turn wireless network card into virtual WiFi router.  The application is currently in beta and features, like, port forwarding and MAC address filtering along with many other improvements are in the pipeline. Moreover, it shows all the connected wireless capable devices and PCs in a list with their names and IP information. This enables you to quickly identify all un-authorized connected devices. To make sure, only authenticated devices are connected, you can define client connection limit, so only authenticated devices will be able to gain network access through host PC.

The app usage is extremely easy. After installation is finished, launch the application and enter the network hotspot name followed by pass key. Once entered, you can optionally choose to specify client limit. Now choose Wireless Network Connection from the list and hit Start to create a private wireless network.

You can connect any number of clients (wireless enabled PCs and other portable devices ) with host PC. All the connected devices get listed in bottom pane. You can view the Wireless Network information from Advanced 1 tab, where it lists down Interface GUID, Mac Address, PhyType, Channel Frequency, and connected peers/clients.

File sharing has been made easy by apps and web services that let you collaborate with friends or colleagues anytime anywhere from just about any device. The real problem that restricts users from sharing files or collaborating on them is the file format. Not all file formats are supported by commonly used collaboration apps and services. If you’re working in a simple word processor or a spreadsheet  the everyday services are all you need but if you’re collaborating on design or audio and video files, you need to ensure the person you’re collaborating with can actually open the files you’re sending and that’s where things get tricky. Dropdo is a web service that resolves the problem of file format compatibility for online file exchange.

Dropdo makes it easy to share files in different formats; since it’s a web service, you don’t have to install anything on your device and neither does the person you’re sharing the file with. It’s as simple as sharing a URL. Dropdo is an easy three step process ; you upload a file from your system or (if it already exists online) you can enter the URL of the file and Dropdo generates a new URL where the file can be viewed. Users can share the file in different ways (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or email). Files can also be downloaded in their original format. If you’re checking a file on a public system (that does not support .psd format), you can use this service to view a .psd and when you return to your own system, you can click on the link and download it. All formatting will be intact. While Dropdo lets you view files from different formats though the quality is sometimes compromised a bit, for example, when viewing a .psd file.

Though a simple concept; it can be used for more then just file sharing or collaboration. An online copy of your resume can be kept on dropdo, and you can share it with practically anyone without worrying if the file will open on the other end or not. Its’ also a great way to show  simple portfolio of your work on a website, in a resume or even your Facebook page.

A Chrome and Firefox extension for dropdo is also available. The extension lets you share files by right clicking on any file link. An ‘Upload to dropdo’ option is added to the context menu. When ever you right-click a link and select the option, it will open the file in dropdo in a new tab and all you need to do is share the link.

Currently the size limit of files that can be shared is 25MB, larger sharing capacity is expected in a premium version of the service. dropdo supports Image, Doc, Code, PDF, Audio, Video and Markdown formats.

Are you running short of Dropbox storage space and looking for a cloud-based service with Dropbox like features and capabilities? You can sign up for freshly released MiMdedia service, which unlike many other cloud based storage services, offers 7 GB for absolutely free with options to watch and stream saved media files, backup multiple PCs automatically, and categorize photos, documents, and music into groups. Just like Dropbox and many other cloud storages, it allows user to share their files with friends and family in simple yet intuitive manner.

Taking an offbeat approach to backup, it first asks you to specify all important data which you can’t afford to lose at any cost. You are presented with a list of drives from where folders are to be selected. Once backup folders are specified, it connects your PC with online server in order to backup selected folders to its server. Using Shuttle Drive is, however, recommended, but you can use broadband service prior to allowing high bandwidth usage to lessen the time required for backup process.

 

MiMedia is more like your online personal media manger. After you’ve uploaded favorite media files, you can stream them from anywhere and share them as well. Media buffs also have sorting options to quickly access required files without having to navigate through a big media file stack.

After the sign up process is completed, download the installer. Running it for the first time needs to verify your login details. The initial configuration wizard will help you configure the backup settings. Choose the drives or folders from selected storage mediums which you want to backup. It’s recommended to select media archive from folder list, so you can access them separately from web UI without facing any problems.

After you’ve chosen folders to backup, move to Bandwidth tab to allocate maximum bandwidth process to speed up the uploading process. From Data Status tab, you can view current folders data which is being uploaded along with total uploaded data size.

The Web UI is nicely designed with all the basic file type categories lined up at the top. Under each category, it allows you to sort files/images/music in required order with an option to download any file to local location.

Additionally, you can change saved backup settings while on the go. The web app lets you remove existing connected PCs, change their backup settings, restore data to current PC, and add more locations from current PC to synchronize them across all the connected systems.

It integrates with Windows My Computer to give quick access to all those files which are synced with other connected PCs or queued for uploading.

As of now, it’s only available for Windows. Mac version will be out soon. Along with Free account, it also comes with Premium plan which costs, 9.99/Month with massive 250 GB storage space limit
